My five favourite bra making tools

So, you’ve decided to dive into the world of bra making? First of all—amazing choice! There’s something so empowering about sewing your own lingerie, creating a perfect fit, and picking dreamy fabrics that make you feel fabulous. But before you get started, let’s talk about the five must-have tools that will make your bra-making journey a breeze.

Grab a cup of coffee, and let’s get into it.

1. Microtex Needles – Because Precision is Everything

I started out with regular sewing needles and whilst I still use these needles as I bulked bought, sometimes they just won’t cut it when working with delicate lingerie fabrics like lace, mesh, and satin. If you are finding you have skipped stitching Microtex needles have an extra sharp point that pierces through fine fabrics without causing snags or skipped stitches. Trust me, these are a game-changer! Also if you are finding you are still having skipped stitches then remember that whilst sewing, sharp needles will become blunt after approx 6-8 hours of sewing.

2. Rotary Cutter and Self-Healing Mat – For Quick Clean Cuts

Cutting out bra pieces is not the time for wonky scissors! A rotary cutter (I love the 45mm size) glides through fabrics, ensuring smooth edges and perfect curves. When you go up to a 60mm it can be quite hard to get round small curves.

Pair it with a self-healing mat, and you’ll feel like a total pro as you cut out your lace cups with ease. I find that if you are just cutting one bra out then this is quicker than cutting out with scissors.

3. Sewing Weights – Keep Your Fabrics in Place

Working with delicate and slippery fabrics? Sewing weights are your new best friend. These little lifesavers hold fabric pieces in place while cutting, preventing shifting and distortion. I got myself boob shape sewing weights made, and they are perfect for when dealing with slippery fabrics such as satin. Remember to cut only in one layer not double up the fabric.

4. Gütermann Thread – The Reliable Choice

A high-quality thread like Gütermann is essential for strong, durable stitches. It’s smooth, lint-free, and won’t snap under tension, making it perfect for sewing lingerie that lasts. You will find you have less skipped stitches using this thread than if you just buy a cheaper quality thread.

5. A Good Pair of Small, Sharp Scissors – For Finesse and Precision

A tiny but mighty tool! These will be your go-to for trimming seam allowances, cutting thread tails, and making tiny snips for a perfect fit. Look for a pair with a fine tip to get into all those tricky corners.
