How to target a niche market in lingerie design

In today's crowded lingerie market, creating products for everyone can often mean appealing to no one. If you’ve seen any of my masterclasses, or worked with me I literally scream out “don’t create a vanilla brand’.

While it may seem counterintuitive, some of the most successful lingerie brands have built their reputation by focusing on a specific audience rather than trying to compete with mainstream retailers. By targeting a niche market, designers can create products that address unique customer needs, establish a clear brand identity, and develop stronger relationships with their audience. My previous brand was targeted at ‘women with small backs, big boobs or were sick of beige bras'.’ Instantly you know who I am aiming at.

Why Niche Markets Matter

The lingerie industry has evolved significantly over the past decade. Consumers are increasingly looking for products that reflect their lifestyles, values, body shapes, and personal preferences. As a result, there is growing demand for specialised lingerie that goes beyond traditional sizing and styling.

A niche market could focus on anything from fuller busts and petite proportions to sustainable materials, adaptive designs, maternity wear, or luxury handmade pieces. The key is identifying a group of customers whose needs are not being fully met by existing brands.

Rather than competing on price or trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience, niche brands position themselves as experts within a particular area. This expertise often becomes a powerful competitive advantage. Tell your story! Think about the brands you love, I bet you know their back story. I bet you can relate to them.

Understanding Your Ideal Customer

Before sketching your first design, it's important to understand exactly who you are designing for. Successful lingerie collections are built around the needs of a specific customer rather than a general market.

Spend time researching your audience's lifestyle, shopping habits, fit challenges, and purchasing motivations. What frustrations do they experience when buying lingerie? What features do they wish more brands offered? What values influence their buying decisions?

The answers to these questions can reveal opportunities that larger brands may have overlooked. Often, the most successful niche products emerge from solving a real problem for a clearly defined customer group.

Designing with Purpose

A strong niche brand is built on more than aesthetics. While beautiful design remains important, customers are often drawn to niche products because they provide a solution.

For example, a customer with a fuller bust may prioritise support and fit above all else, while someone seeking sustainable lingerie may focus on ethical production and environmentally responsible materials. Understanding these priorities allows designers to make informed decisions throughout the product development process.

Every design choice, from fabric selection to construction techniques, should support the needs of the target customer. When products are designed with purpose, they create a stronger emotional connection with consumers and encourage long-term loyalty. I think that designing the second collection can be harder than the first, for the first you have researched and sat with an idea for so long, with the second you start to look around and can be swayed off your actual customer who you are designing for.

Creating a Brand That Speaks Directly to Your Audience

Your niche should influence every aspect of your brand, not just the products themselves. From your website and social media presence to your packaging and photography, every touchpoint should reinforce your positioning.

Customers should immediately recognise who your brand is for and what makes it different. A clear message helps attract the right audience while setting realistic expectations about your products and values. This is so important, having your customer recognise your designs is so powerful.

Many emerging brands make the mistake of broadening their message too early. In reality, a focused brand identity is often more memorable and effective than one that attempts to appeal to everyone. I made this mistake and designed a bra that was made from lace and a tie-side brief, this didn’t resonate at all with my brand. My brand was based off mixing colour and [rints, and then here I was producing a black lace bra, why would they buy it? Turn out they didn’t, it was the worse selling product of my range.

Building Authority Through Education

One of the most effective ways to attract a niche audience is through education. Consumers frequently search for advice on sizing, fit, fabric choices, and lingerie care before making a purchase. By creating valuable content around these topics, brands can establish themselves as trusted experts.

Blog articles, fit guides, styling advice, and educational social media content not only help customers make informed decisions but also improve visibility through search engines. Over time, this expertise can become just as valuable as the products themselves. When I began this company at the start it was all about writing books and because I was looking after tiny children so my client work was small. So, I began to write blogs and try to hit weekly, turns out that was a smart move as that is how most people find me. Also now with AI, I get referenced quite a lot.

Listening to Your Market

Even the most thorough research cannot replace real customer feedback. Once your products reach the market, listening to customer experiences becomes essential. This is why I advise to start small rather than launch with ten products, get a product out there and you will learn so much rather than wait until you have ten products. These insights often lead to product refinements, new collection ideas, and opportunities for growth within your chosen niche. The most successful lingerie brands view customer feedback as an ongoing part of the design process rather than a one-time exercise.

Targeting a niche market in lingerie design is about understanding a specific audience and serving them exceptionally well. Rather than chasing broad appeal, successful niche brands focus on solving particular problems, meeting unique needs, and building genuine connections with their customers.

In a competitive industry, specialisation can be one of the most effective ways to stand out. By identifying a clear niche, designing with purpose, and consistently delivering value, lingerie brands can create a loyal customer base and establish a lasting presence in the market.
