Where to position the bra straps on a pattern
Bra straps - until you design a bra and work out the pattern, you’ve probably never thought about how close the straps are going to your arm or neck. With different style bras they will in different positions.
This article isn’t a long piece where you have to have to get to grips with lots of information, the basic rule is the lower the cup at the underarm, then higher the cup at the CF, the closer the strap is to the arm.
Put another way the higher the cup at the underarm, the lower it is at the centre front the closer the strap will be at the neck point. I’m not talking massive amounts, but the straps follow the natural curve from your underarm to the shoulder. (see red line on picture)
The blue outline is a balconette shape, which has wider straps, the yellow out line is a plunge shape , which tilt and bring the breasts towards the centre front therefore the strap needs to go closer together because you are naturally pushing the boobs together in a plunge shape bra. If the straps were to go too far apart the neck line of the bra would cut into the breast tissue. Plus the lower you go at the CF the straps need to be closer to the neck so that the breast didn’t fall out of the bra when you bent forward.
