New: Automatic working spec sheet available

happy new year

Over the Xmas break it was clear that having a baby under one, I can’t fit in all the work I would like to do and keep up designing and writing. I also receive at least 3 times a week, new designers asking me questions about spec sheets or tech packs, not necessarily wanting me to do it for them, just questions on them completing it themselves. That was one of the reasons I started provided the technical side of lingeire design, it was to empower people to not only design lingerie but understand a bit more about it and take their brand into their own hands, take their brand to the next level and be able to do it themselves it they want.

So as well as the books on the spec sheet, and the PDF design sheets, I’ve decided to release actual spec sheets that will work out all the size measurements you need. So every bra or brief you ever do, you will be able to work out and provide spec sheets for every day design you do.

All you need is the sample size, take the measurements and enter them into the spec sheet and every other measurement will be worked out. You don’t have to spend time figuring it out. I’ve done it for you.

This is not something I learnt at uni, it was something that was taught on my first job whilst designing for UK high street stores, back then we did it all by hand so it was a Maths exercise every time and it took forever. As soon as I ran by own label I learnt that I could computerise it all and add the formulas into an excel spread sheet and it would do it all for me.

This is the same spec sheet I start with when companies ask me to produce a spec sheet for their lingerie. There are three available, a brief, a soft bra and a non wired cup size bra. The brief and soft bra are x/small - x/large and the non wired bra spec is 32A-36C, if you’re sample is a different size to the one it suggests, please get it touch and this can be changed at no extra cost.

What is a spec sheet?

Specification sheets provide all the sizing information of your garment, with a technical drawing with arrows correlating to the each part you are measuring. As well as the POM (point of measurement) it will include your company name, date, style number and garment description.

Why do I need it?

A spec sheet is used as communication between the design team (may just be you) and the factory. It’s used in production (Quality control will check the lingerie against your spec on each size to make sure it measures within tolerance) and pattern-making (to make a pattern and to grade all the other sizes), basically, get it right from the start and it ensures you of costly errors in the future.

What’s so great about this spec sheet?

Okay picture the scenario

  1. You’ve designed your lingerie, you approach a factory and they say they can source fabrics and trims for you, how much do you need? Erm …..

  2. You’ve made or have had made, a sample of your lingerie, it needs to increase by 2cm at the CF and 1cm at the side seam on the brief, and you need to change the whole spec sheet across the sizes, and you need to complete it within the next ten minutes. Erm…

  3. It gives you the full control over your brand and allows to change different styles, add new styles without the cost of paying someone else to produce a spec sheet for you or alter any measurements if you end up changing the size. It also sees you through season after season for any new styles you’re thinking of.

  4. Also it’s pretty fun (or that could be the spread sheet nerd in me) to see what started as an idea in your head be one-step closer to your dreams, by filling out this spec sheet you have a full size range with all the measurements worked out what it will all finish at.

*Please note that the cup size spec sheet doesn’t include any wire measurements as wire can come in many different sizes.
