Writing your spec in INCHES

I write my spec sheets in centimetres, for every job I’ve had it’s always been done in CMs, although there was one place where the older grader, graded in Inches and it was my job to convert the inches to centimetres by hand.

So those measurements have always stuck with me.

Earlier this week someone emailed me asking for advice for converting CM to Inches so here is what I previously used. *please take note though that this measuring system isn’t as accurate as working CM as the measuring tapes we used only showed 1/8 or 1/16 when measuring in Inches so you either have to round up or down.

So main amount you grade by and it’s Inches equivalent (the numbers in the brackets is the actual conversion)

2.5cm = 1” (63/64”)

1.5cm = 5/8” (19/32”)

1.4cm = 9/16” (35/64”)

1.2cm = 4/8” (15/32”)

1cm = 3/8” (25/64”)

0.5cm = 1/8” (13/64”)

To save you the hassle of converting it all, I have uploaded the automatic briefs spec and the soft bra spec in Inches for it to work out everything for you.

The cup size bra got complicated by rounding up with the cross grades. It can be done, but you would have to individually change each CM number for it to fit the Inches, so I would use the figures above as a rough guide to check everything you grade if you are use to using inches and write the spec in CM.
