What I actually do at work

Have you ever looked at someone else’s business and wondered how they run their days, or where their earnings come from. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of a company and you only ever see the highlight reel. So I thought I’d put together a little what work goes on at Van Jonsson Design.

The business is split into three categories

  1. The books and all the technical information/design sheets to help you become and learn to be a lingerie designer.

  2. The consultancy work

  3. Vanjo Lingerie

THE LINGERIE BOOKS

Most of the books are available in print or e-book form, they sell on this website, on Amazon, in a couple of book stores and Etsy. To support the books there is a blog in which I try and post weekly. Alongside the books are design sheets which details spec sheets and tech pack layouts, and recently I have launched an automatic spec sheet which works out every size for you as I can’t fit in all the consultancy work; and a spec sheet can change form sample to sample, so it’s something if you’ve access to can save you heaps of money and time.

Also this year I introduced the ability to buy tech drawings in which you can alter in AI, which again was because I couldn’t meet the demand to produce tech drawings, and some people just need ones that aren’t just shapes which there are a lot like that at the moment. I’m planning to extend this range and try cover a lot of shapes of lingerie.

The books bring in approx 2/3rds of my income and it’s lovely knowing that I’ve helped people understand the technical side of lingerie.

CONSULTANCY WORK

This brings in approx 1/3 of my income, I would love to do more but have to pick and choose what I take on because I have children at home, and only work on others people’s work in the evening, before anyone wakes up or when the youngest naps, otherwise it all gets a bit too busy and I feel like I’m balancing too many plates. The consultancy work can consist of one-to-one chats via skype of what to do next to launch your label. Doing technical drawings, technical packs, patterns or grading for a company off their ideas for them. I do the odd bit of sampling but don’t have the all the proper machines needed so tend not to go down that route as you would probably have to get it re-done by a factory.

It’s all mainly for independent designers or start ups.

VANJO LINGERIE

I group the income from this in with the lingerie books, as I don’t do big quantity collections like i use to, I use Vanjo to show case how to make lingerie and to show the patterns that are made from the line. Some people buy the lingerie then buy the pattern afterwards so they can make their own knowing it fits, others simply buy the designs or request a commissioned piece.

That’s it really when I’m not working on other people’s designs I’m working on my lingeire designs, or writing new books and design sheets.
